From the Manufacturer
This woodworking shaper features a powerful 1-1/2-horsepower, totally enclosed, fan-cooled, reversing, single-phase motor with industrial push-button controls. The solid cast-iron work surface is extra large. The heavy-duty one-piece steel stand, with motor cover, provides stability. Safe, accurate spindle height adjustments are possible with a hand wheel and spindle lock. The two reversible spindle speeds (7,000 and 9,000 rpm, forward and reverse) add to this shaper's versatility. The adjustable workpiece hold downs are mounted to the fence. It comes with 1/2- and 3/4-inch interchangeable spindles, 1/2- and 1/4-inch router bit collets, miter gauge, and a 4-inch dust chute.

Customer Reviews:
Ergonomics? We don't need no stinkin' ergonomics!, April 10, 2002
Reviewer: A home improvement enthusiast from Phoenix
The good news: it's solid and heavy.

The bad news: the ergonomics are so bad it must be a prototype, it can't possibly be a production model. Mainly every control knob / lever / bolt is in the way of every other control knob / lever / bolt. For example:

The spindle height adjusting knob is right next to it's own lock down "knob", which is one of those push-button-turn-handle deals â'' with only a ¼ turn freedom of movement. A sloppy, stupid, knuckle busting, time wasting design.

You can't change bits without removing the spindle / router-collet, and you can't do that without partially _DISASSEMBLING_ the fence. And you can't do that without keeping wrenches â'' some open end, some Allen, some metric, some English â'' in your pocket. A sloppy, stupid, time wasting design.

The fence-hold-down-bolts get in the way of the fence-frame, and you're all the time pushing the bolt-turning rod back and forth: ¾ turn, push rod, ¾ turn, push rod â'' 22 times to remove the bolt!. A big time waster. This sloppy, stupid design would have been fixed by making the hold-down bolts one inch longer. Jet just must not care.

Why would you want to remove the fence? Well for one thing, you can't move the fence back far enough to route a dado. Gotta' remove the fence and clamp on some other fence you got somewhere besides Jet. Jet tech support says, simultaneously:
1) They can't imagine and have never heard of anyone ever routing a dado (!!) with the machine â'' which BTW comes with a set of router bits, and,
2) People who use the machine as a router table tap new fence-hold-down-bolt holes in the table.

The door you open every time you change a bit hits the cord taking power to the motor. A sloppy, stupid design.

Power. It's got a small motor. The motor on mine bogs down routing a ½ dado, 1/8 inch deep, in soft pine.

I could go on. You get the point. Won't get fooled again.

Very good product, December 20, 2001

CONS: The router bit set is 1/4 inch shank and the collet was made imperfectly. Jet service is replacing. The fence isn't great. I don't like that both sides move -- it would be better if it were one piece.

PROS: Plenty of power and heavy. 1/2 the price of the other shapers.

I got it delivered last week and so far, I love it.

Better than any router table, August 9, 2001

I've had my shaper for 4 months. I am pleased with all of the shaper features. The two piece fence has very fine adjustment knobs. They are great for out feed adjustments. The true 1-1/2 HP motor has plenty of power. Not like the over rated routers on the market. Image running a table saw with a 3 HP router? The 1/4" and 1/2" collets and router bits are easier to change than my router table. The stock hold downs are ok. You need a metric wrench to adjust. Over all this is a good buy, powerful, quiet, and adustable. The only problem I had is the same as others. The table rings are very difficult to remove.

Great tool with a few rough edges, April 12, 2001
Reviewer: A home improvement enthusiast from Rochester, NY United States
First the Good: This JET shaper has plenty of power to handle even big raised panel cutters. It is a solid tool which gets the job done. The alignment fences work well and have very good fine adjustment knobs. From a pure functional standpoint I would recommend this tool.

Now the Not So Good: The manual is worthless. It makes absolutely no mention of how to adjust the drive belt. (If the belt is too loose (which is hard to tell) it will slip and make the tool seem under-powered) The only way to get enough tension on the belt is to wedge a pipe (or something else which gives leverage) against the motor to push it back (it would have been nice to have an adjustment bolt)and tighted the three bolts which secure the housing. There is also a collar which must be removed to use large cutters (such as those need for raised panels), the manual makes no mention of how to get this out. It was pressed in place with so much tension, I had to disassemble the top of the shaper, remove the table and pound out the collar from underneath - not fun. Lastly, as mentioned in some of the other reviews, the knobs on the fence do get in the way of one another making adjustment more difficult than necessary.

If you can get around the rough edges (few tools are truly perfect)this is a great tool to own. It makes beautiful raised panel doors which would be very difficult to make without a shaper.

Minor modifications - then ready to run, February 6, 2001
Reviewer: sadster from Stevensville, Mi USA
Owned this shaper for a couple of months. I use it in place of my router table due to limited shop space. I bought it mainly to make kitchen cabinet doors and door (casing) molding. It is very smooth running and quiet, with lots of power. I did have to make a few modifications though to make running it a little easier. First, I used 1.5" dowel rods to make extensions for the fence course adjust screws - otherwise they bump into the fence and only allow a 1/2 turn at a time. Also I replaced the nuts on the individual fence halves with wingnuts for ease of adjustment.

Best buy for the money, January 29, 2001

I bought this shaper for a job I was doing, my old shaper bit the saw dust. I made 1 3/8 inch, five panel interior doors. I was quite surprized with the power from the 1 1/2 horse power motor. All the features were well though out. The only thing that I found to be a problem is the removable table collets were very hard to get out. I fixed that with 220 grit sand paper and oil. Over all for the money, I think your getting a good tool that should last for years.

Don't do it!, January 27, 2001

I have jet, I will buy jet again and I like jet. But not this one! Motor mounts were broken when it arrived. Once repaired, changing spindles was difficult. Machine work was sloppy and the fence well useless comes to mind. I'm returning it and saving my beans for the delta.

Thoughts on an unused tool., November 16, 2000

I bought the JWS-22CS in June along with two other Jet tools (jointer and 1100 CFM Dust Collection). Unfortunatly I've yet to use the shaper as it was delivered with a damaged power cord. Jet has yet to send me a replacement (well they did in July, but they sent the wrong parts which I had to return). My only response to date is "It's on backorder." A dealer had warned me that, while Jet makes good tools, they provide poor service. His last words: "You'll be sorry!" Unfortunately, so far he's right. I give it one star 'cause it looks nice, sitting there in my shop, bright and new looking.

Great shaper!, November 8, 2000

I ordered this shaper over the phone with Tool Crib as the web site said they were out of them. Had it in a week.

This is a real nice machine. Fit and finsh was awesome. I was replacing my router table and concerned with running smaller router bits on this unit. Well I can tell you that it cuts smooth with even small bits. You can't believe how quiet this is compaired to my old router table, what a suprise. The fence adjustment is solid, and easy to use. Comes with the 4" dust chute, 1/4 and 1/2 router bit collets which is a plus compared to other brands. I really like this machine!

The perfect home workshop shaper, July 20, 2000
Reviewer: James A. Morrow
For me a shaper is one of those tools you don't use very much but when you need it its really nice to have. Like all the Jet tools I have this machine is very well made, everything works the way it's supposed to and the fit and finish are excellent. In the past, I've use a delta router table for making raised panel doors. I just completed some doors on my new shaper, what an improvement. I found that the shaper was much quiter and smoother then the router table. There was also less chip out on the rails and styles. The big improvement was in raising the panels. Instead of a bunch of light passes tp route the panel without chipping out. I could shape the panels in just two passes without any chipout. What an improvement. No its not as good as a big shaper with a 3 horse motor. But for the home or small comerical shop it is ideal.
