Amazon.com Review
Bosch's 1617EVSPK is a strong entry in the 2-1/4-horsepower combination router market. Solid, all-magnesium construction makes the Bosch durable and lightweight, while special touches, such as wooden handles on the fixed base and contoured, soft-grip handles on the plunge base, add to the comfort of users and give the tool a look of distinction lacking in some of its competitors.

Of course, looks are only skin deep, and this router has plenty to offer below the surface as well. At its heart, a powerful 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower motor delivers consistent results at variable speeds of 8,000 to 25,000 rpm. The exclusive precision centering design ensures bits are perfectly centered in the router base, a handy feature for maintaining accurate cut lines. A wider-than-average base opening provides superior visibility and allows the Bosch to accept larger bits, while a micro bit-depth adjustment system makes fine-tuning fast and easy. Unlike many comparable routers, the Bosch 1617EVSPK is designed to move from base to base without the use of tools. Instead, it clamps solidly into place for quick and easy transfers. What's more, the motor never rotates while adjusting depths, allowing you to stow the power cord on either side where it's out of the way.

From the Manufacturer
The new Bosch 1617EVSPK gives you the best of both the fixed-base and plunge router worlds! It features a 12 amp, 2-1/4 HP, 8,000-25,000 rpm (no load) with plunge base and fixed base in a rugged well-organized carry case. This kit features the exclusive quick clamp system allowing tool-free movement of motor from base to base.

Other key features include variable speed, soft-start, and constant response circuitry that maintains speed under load. The depth adjustment system feature coarse and microfine bit depth adjustment with resettable indicators. Both bases have large base openings with 2-inch subbase openings, accepting larger bits and providing better visibility. Right or left switch and cord locations provides both choice and consistency, and the motor does not rotate during depth adjustment. The tool-free templet guide adapter allows quick changes and both bases feature the Bosch exclusive precision centering design for centering optional templet guides. The motor has a one-piece armature shaft for accuracy and long bit shank capacity. The kit includes 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch self-releasing collets, templet guide adapter, and comfortable drop-forged wrenches. Multiple new optional accessories allow you to build a complete Bosch routing system.

The Best Router on the Market, October 10, 2002

I looked around at all of the different routers and settled on Bosch after the good review that Wood Magazine had given it. I had the opportunity to use a friend's Porter Cable for several months before I made my purchase and I found that used in a router table, the PC was a real pain to adjust--you have to twist the whole motor and it isn't particularly precise if you are needing to make fine 1/16" and smaller adjustments. The Bosch has a micro-adjust which makes those small adjustments easier to make.

This is the fourth (or should it count as two, in which case it would be fifth) router to find its way into the workshop. The Craftsman quickly became a hand-me-down, which reduces the count to three. There is a Freud, which is now consigned to perminent duty as a table router, its heavy carcus never to be wrestled with again, a PC 310 for light hand-held and freehand work, and the Bosch(s)for about anything else that may need routing. The buying decision came down to the PC set and the Bosch. After reading other reviews on Amazon, and remembering the grief in changing bits on the PC 310, the Bosch was a no-brainer. Fit and finish are excellient the plung base is smooth and locks tight with no effort, as opposed to struggeling with the Freud, and changing from one base to the other is a dream. Sure glad I read the Amazon reviews.

I have been shopping for a combination router pack for quite a while and was quite pleased when Bosch offered this router. It is extremely quiet esp for 2hp--does not have the high pitch whine associated with other routers. Changing bases is very easy, and the handles are comfortable. My only complaint was the switch--my hand has to come off the router to switch on/off the machine. But this slight inconvenience does not warrant a drop in ratings. When compared with the Porter Cable (which I am usually a big fan of) I would have to say that this router beats the PC hands down.

The first/last router I bought was a Rockwell 3/4 horse. Rockwell was bought out years ago by Porter-Cable. The router has been a tank and served my minimal usage well over the years but I'm now at a point where I can spoil myself with some new toys and get my home shop to a stage where I can keep myself occupied as I spy retirement years coming up. My Rockwell will be passed down to my son where it will continue to serve him. After reading as many comparitive articles as I could and many of the user reviews here, I settled on the Bosch 2hp combo kit. I also picked up a D handle base so I could mount the standard base to my router table permanently. Thus far the Bosch has lived up to all my expectations and the reviews. The soft start and adjustment features are a real joy. In working on an Arts and Craft bed for my daugher I have been able to set the cut depth via the fine adjustment, then use the macro adjust to add another 1/2" to the cut, then back to the fine setting, all with no wiggle in the fine setting. A feature not even advertised. Bosch came up with a great design years ago and stuck with it.

I've been shopping around for an upgrade in my router--compared this router to the PC model and found this router to be much more user-friendly. Only complaint I have even heard or encountered is the power switch location. This router is very quiet (much more than compariable models), and the 2hp can handle just about any job that you ask of it. The price is slightly more than other models as well, but I've learned that you get what you pay for. I highly recommend this router.

New Bosch combo is the best., May 10, 2002

The new combo pack from bosch is the best tool I own. I have it attatched to my router table and it is like using a shaper. The fixed base is very light and easy to work with and the plunge adapter gives the flexibility that is needed for all routers.

I really really enjoy woodworking and I can't say enough about this router combo set! This is the FIRST router that I have bought and really ever used! I shopped around and looked at various routers (PC, Makita, Freud, and of course Bosch). What really got me about this set was the price, how easy it is to switch from the plunge base to the fixed base, and the variable speed adjustment.

Today, I worked with it for almost all day. I was crafting a nice mirror for a family member. Again,it did everything I needed it to do. When I had to plunge into the mahogany to cut a recess for the mirror, it along with my MLCS 1/4 straight bit did an excellent job. To cut out the handle a jig saw was used. Switching out the plunge for the fixed by just simply opening a clamp was easy and then I used a roundover bit to put a nice bullnose on it.

This is a great router. Bought the plunge / fixed base kit, and my only complaint is that it does not come with the templates needed to use the router with dovetail jigs, etc. It uses a special template locking ring that only fits Bosch templates, or you have to buy a special Bosch template adapter to use the standard screw in type. ...

Quiet, powerful, easy to set up., February 3, 2002

What more could you want. This machine is powerful and very quiet. Setup is quick, easy, precise and locks down tight. Changing bases is quick and does not require any tools (unlike the comparable Porter Cable). Depth adjustment is done without twisting the motor, so you never have to work with the cord sticking out of the front of the machine.

The soft start is amazing - no kick when you turn it on.

I recommend the dust extraction kit (RA1173). It gets about 99% of the dust and 95% of the chips. Puts an end to the mounds of sawdust that routers up spread all over your shop/garage.

Disappointed, January 30, 2002
Reviewer: scottsmaller_84 from Riverside, IL USA
I was disappointed because the regular Bosch plunge router (not convertable) got great reviews and I was expecting the same features. But this unit doesn't have 1) handle mounted trigger. Only the top mounted toggle switch so you have to move your hand off the handles to operate. Hate that. AND 2) Micro adjustment on plunge. Otherwise I think it's the same quality, but I returned mine because of these shortcomings.
