Amazon.com Review
A good filtration system is as important as any tool in your shop, and the Jet AFS-1000 is a pretty inspired machine. Like other systems on the market, Jet's uses a two-filter process: an outer filter removes particles up to 5 microns in size and an inner, three-pocket filter traps particles as small as 1 micron. The electrostatic outer filter easily withstands three or four washings, and the inner filter can be blown clean easily with compressed air. On the power end, Jet's three-speed, 1/6-horsepower motor filters to 1044 cfm on high speed. The outer filter is well sealed and provides efficient intake. However, what really sets the AFS-1000 apart from most filtration systems is its remote control and timer features. Since these systems are most effective when placed high or hung from the ceiling, being able to control all of the unit's functions via remote control is a feature we quickly decided we wouldn't want to live without. The timer, which can also be set via remote, affords you the option to set it and forget it.

From the Manufacturer
This remote-controlled air filtration system cleans and circulates air. Runs quietly. Filters 98% of all 5-micron particles and 85% of all 1-micron particles. Uses a convenient standard-size outer filter.

From American Woodworker
No matter how good your dust collection may be, there are always "the ones that got away," those stray dust particles determined to float around the air and end up in your lungs (or in a can of varnish!). That's where an air scrubber comes in. Like the name says, it scrubs dust particles from the air in your shop.

Jet's AFS-1000 scrubber offers a lot of features: a 5-micron outer filter and 1-micron inner filter; a three-speed motor that provides 450, 550, or 650 cubic feet per minute (cfm); a timer that can shut the scrubber off after two, four, or eight hours; and a remote to control the whole deal, turn it on and off, set the speed, and set the timer. Because most scrubbers are hung from the ceiling, making them hard to get to, the remote makes sense. If all this sounds good but you need a bigger unit, look for Jet's new AFS-2000. It'll have all the features of the AFS-1000, but moves air at 800, 1,000, or 1,300 cfm. In addition, the AFS-2000 will take charcoal or electrostatic filters, providing even better air cleaning.

How do you know what size scrubber you need? Buy one that recirculates the air in your shop 6 to 12 times per hour. Here's how to run the numbers: First calculate the volume of your shop in cubic feet, then divide this number by the cfm of the scrubber you're considering. The answer is how many minutes it'll take for one air exchange. Five minutes means 12 exchanges per hour.

What can I say? This unit does what the company says it will do, and it does it without any problems. It was easy to hang and is easy to use with the remote control. The electrostatic filter truly does its job. As a result of static electicity being generated by the moving air, tremendous amounts of fine dust finds itself trapped on the blanket-like material on the outside of the filter. It is very easy to clean also, just a quick shop vac job and it's clean again. I had no problem with this unit being out of square as others have reported. I found it to be in perfect condition right out of the box. Highly recommended by me.

Lots of Air, October 16, 2002

I have been impressed by just how much air this machine moves. Generally quiet. What is particularly useful is the remote and timer functions. After working in my shop all day, I can set the timer to run for an additional two hours and let it silently clean the air while I'm going on to other things. It shuts itself off automatically at the end of the time period. The remote is very helpful as it is up on the ceiling and is hard to reach.

Product came with all of the hardware I needed. The one thing I had to provide were the lag screws to mount it.

Highly recommend.

I am Happy to report that My new Jet Air Filter/Cleaner arrived today and is rated at 1044CFM on the highest speed. The confusion of whether this Unit was actually 650CFM as per the Jet Tools Site for model AFS-1000 has now been cleared up. The problem is that the current Model number here (Amazon), and in the latest Tool Crib catalog is wrong. The correct Model number should be AFS-1000b. The Cleaner was shipped cross country and showed in absolutely perfect condition. It is quite impressive for the little money it's sold for. It's quiet on the low speed and of course picks up some air movement noise as you use the medium and high, but not un-bearable. I can't Imagine a better buy for the money in air cleaners that would be used from a double garage size shop on down. The only Item that's a bit disappointing is the free "Electrostatic" filter that came with it. It's actually the same filter I buy for my home furnace that sells for around $8 for a 3-pack. Actually that's probably good news. I'll update this review if needed down the road after a good 2 or 3 projects worth of dust pass thru the cleaner, but I'll be surprised if I need to. Im very satisfied.

The current editorial revue and the current september 02 issue of the tool crib catalog rate this unit at 1044cfm on high speed. There is evidently some concern whether the actual Jet air filter unit you receive is really rated at 1044cfm which is evidently Jets latest model or the older models 650cfm. I have just ordered this Item, and if the Unit is not the advertised 1044cfm it will be returned and this rating will be adjusted to 1 star. If it actually is rated at the advertised 1044cfm it has a real good chance of earning 5 stars. Stay Tuned!!

AFS-1000 Vs AFS-1000B, August 30, 2002

Just in case anyone is still confused... I haven't placed my order yet, as I am still a bit confused too.

But, according to JET, the AFS-1000 has a maximum air flow of 650 CFM. The AFS-1000B, its replacement model, has a maximum air flow of 1044 CFM, a significant difference.

I'd like to know which model Amazon.com is actually selling at $219.99. My guess is that it's the discontinued AFS-1000, as the specifications would indicate.

An air filter should never be used in lieu of a dust collector but if youre like me and workin a garage with a combination of bench top tools and handheld power tools you know you can't ever get it all with a collector. I've heard pros and cons on filters but I wish I had bought one of these sooner. The Jet 1000 is Very quiet, has multiple mounting options (I put mine up against a window on my 4x8 workbench and use it like an exhaust fan to keep the output from blowing whatever dust is in the air back around) and the timer is a great idea. Would consider moving it inside for messy jobs too (it's quiet enough). Don't go without a good dust collector but in combo with this filter you've made a good investment in your health and enjoyment of your shop

I need a filter to take care of a room 24x36x14 ft high. Tool Crib magazine say this Jet filter puts out 1044 cfm on high speed. This web page say the maximum cfm on high speed is 650. What is the real story? I do not know enough to rate.

This device keeps the majority of dust from settling on everything in my shop. It works great. I don't think I would want to do without the timer and multiple speeds. I usually keep the remote near the door. When I walk in I turn the unit on, when I leave I set the timer for 2 hrs. I usually keep it on low unless I'm freehand routing, then turn it to med. High is more noisy, so I reserve it for MDF.

The reason I only gave 4 stars is that it came dented and looked to be a little warped (i.e. out of square) from the factory. The fit of the main filter is also a little suspect. It looks like it is too small so they just added some extra thick foam around the edges.

I have been amazed by how fast a thick layer of dust collects on the surface of the outer filter and how fast it clears the air after a big sanding effort. My shop is air conditioned and this filter helps keep dust from circulating through, and clogging, the coils of the A/C unit. I have used compressed air to easily clean the outside filter, however, the inner bag filter has not yet needed cleaning due to the efficiency of the outer filter. I love the timer and the remote control, and I don't find the noise objectionable. The unit operates smoothly, without vibration, and does not move on the hanger chain links. This is my third Jet tool, all great.

When I got this, I at first wasn't impressed. After I stained an armoire while this unit was running with the charcoal filter, I wished I had had it for years. When sanding and preparing for finishing, it is great because it will pick up the fine particles in the air. When finishing it eats the vapors with the charcoal filter. It is also good when painting, or doing spring cleaning in an enclosed space.
