Remember that annoying workplace slogan, "Your parents don't work here--clean up after yourself"? Well, with the Delta 1,200 cfm dust collector, you've got a powerful, well built machine to keep the shop clean. Built with a 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor for long life and curved steel impellers for durability, this dust collector whisks away debris from tools' dust ports with surprising force, so the only thing collecting particles around the shop might be your old broom resting in the closet. Set on a sturdy caster base for easy mobility, the dust collector stands 88 inches tall and has two intake ports for collecting simultaneously from multiple machines. The large 6-cubic-foot bags will reduce your trips to the trash and filter the air of particles down to 30 microns. For cleaner air, you can always upgrade to 5- or 1-micron bags. This is a great tool for any midsize woodworking shop.

From the Manufacturer
Perfect for smaller shops, this 1-1/2-horsepower dust collector provides 1,200 cubic feet per minute of airflow for efficient dust collection from two machines at a time. The durable steel impeller is curved to produce the maximum air velocity. A finned motor housing keeps the motor running cool even during extended use. The collector bags filter particles down to 30 microns for capturing fine dust and chips. For more efficient operation, the motor can also be wired for use with 230-volt service. The entire unit rolls about easily on four casters, allowing the dust collector to move from machine to machine as it's needed. Two-year warranty on machines, parts, and accessories. Includes dust collector motor with impeller, two collection bags, two four-inch diameter dust ports, one six-foot hose, one dust port cap, base with four casters, and instruction manual.

assembly not so easy, September 16, 2002

At first glance this dust collector appears to be a fine unit. However, assembly is not so easy. The motor is mounted to a base which has flanges at the bottom. The motor base is bolted to a roll-around platform via the flanges, but this step is near impossible as the flanges are bent up at a 45 degree angle. A sure sign of poor quality control. The flanges must be made flat by the owner before the unit can be assembled.

The good thing about this unit is that it can be easily rewired for 220 volt operation.

One word of caution -- do not lean over the fan when turning the unit on. I accidently picked up a nail in the inlet hose, and it pierced the fan discharge hose.

This unit is better than I expected. The price is good. The box was intact on arrival but the styrofoam was broken. Never-the-less the unit was undamaged. Went together in about a half-hour with no help. Agree with others about the lockwashers. They belong next to the nuts not the bolt heads. Also (and Delta admits this is a problem with several manuals) they never tell you when to tighten the "finger-tighten-only" assemblies. Please don't forget this step or thing will collapse quickly. Also, their "helper" clips for installing the lower bag are unecessary, it's not that hard to do as long as you thread the steel band through the "belt" loops. Don't like their 4" twin-wire hose clamps so I got some stainless band clamps. I intend to convert the motor to 240 volts as I did with my saw. They just work better that way and you have less voltage drop in the cords. An added bonus is an increase in horsepower due to the better magnetic properties of the induction fields in the windings of the motor. Strongly recommend this unit. It will also interface well into a whole-shop 6" piping system.

The collector arrived in a single box and when opened I realized how poorly it was packed. The styrofoam was broken and crushed from the weight of the motor shifting during shipping. The intake rim around the impeller housing was bent and required some hearty whacks with the hammer to bend it back into shape.

Assembly took about an hour with a helper and was fairly simple - requiring a couple basic wrenches and screwdrivers. I was not shorted any parts and actually had several washers, nuts and bolts left over. The instructions were mediocre and I have two complaints:

(1) The instructions are wrong when they describe where to place the lock-washers on the bolts. I'm no expert but it seems like they should go next to the nut - and not next to the flat washer by the head of the bolt.

(2) The instructions tell you to only finger-tighten a majority of the bolts that connect items to the base - yet they never tell you when to finish tightening them down. Please don't forget to tighten them else your whole unit may fall to pieces!

Newer versions of this model now include some clips that you will attach around the waistband. These clips are designed to make it easier to attach the lower bag without a helper. The problem is that (a) the clips do not hold the bag tight enough and (b) it is not very difficult to put them on without them. Speaking of the waistband, mine is not level and although it does not appear to present any problems, it kind of bothers me anyway.

All in all it seems like a good machine with reasonable fit and finish. Once the motor gets up to speed it sounds great and is about as loud as you would expect from such a device. The suction pressure thru the 4" pipe is impressive. It also takes a long time to wind down when turning the power off - which makes the machine feel well balanced and lubricated. Finally, be prepared to place the collector on a separate circuit if you are going to run it with another power hungry tool.

(Note 7/25/2002: I just received the 1 micron bags and the clips work very well since these bags are very thick. I have also noticed around a 10% drop in air pressure/velocity with the new bags.)

(Note 8/28/2002: The unit has been making some strange noises when I shut it off - kind of a rumbling sound as the blade spins down. I had been ignoring it for a while and then the other day it started making a scrapping sound too. I took the intake cover off the blade housing and saw that the bolt holding the blade on the machine was about 1 thread away from falling off! That is just plain stupid, Delta. I now feel compeled to demote my rating to only 3 stars. Hope this thing holds together for the long term but I'm starting to wonder.)

Couldn't get any better!, January 12, 2002

Although I've never owned a dust collecter before, I couldn't imagine another one being any better. After reading other reviews of this product I really expected it to be alot louder than it actually is. In fact mine is farely quiet. Other reviews also spoke of tripping circuit breakers and blowing fuses, but I have had no such problems. I use it in my work shop two or three days a week, not commercially. It seems to be well constructed and sturdy. The supports for the bag holder which is located between the top and bottom bags could use some reinforcement where they are attached to the metal base. They have a little flex at that point and I don't know how that compares to other brands. Finishing , all I can say is that I am a Delta fan and if you have any Delta Power tools this one is built with the same level of quality as the rest.

I just received my 50-850 today, assembled it in about a hour.

I found it to be heavy duty, well for the price it is, I had previously installed my metal duct work and ready to go; this dust collector sucks very well, now I can work in a clean inviroment. I have earnestly searched for the best price to quality ratio and found this one to be a winner , I would have given it a 5 star but I only have had it for one day!

This is a great dust collector. I bought it soon after getting my Unisaw, because the dust it created was too much to deal with. It picks up almost every particle. In reguards to the circuit breaker tripping referred to in other ratings, I have only had the circuit breaker trip once, and that was the one on the dust collector, not the house panel. I installed a seperate circuit with 12 guage romex, a 20 amp breaker, and a single outlet.

I bought this dust collector in November. It's now mid-January, and I have not yet used it. When first tested, it promptly blew four 20 amp slow blow fuses in succession, on a circuit that I have used for many, more powerful tools. I took it to a Delta repair shop. After five weeks, I got it back with a new motor, at no cost. It still blows fuses. I called Delta's "hot line", and was told that a 20 amp circuit is not enough. They recommend 30 amps, or re-wire it for 220 volts. I think I now know why it won't start. The impeller (fan) is a massive thing, rather crudely rivited together from heavy sheet steel. It has so much inertia that the motor can't get up to speed before the fuse blows. Aside from the motor loading, I question the use of steel in a fan that would be expected to handle wood dust and metal particles, due to the potential for creating sparks/explosions.

This year, Santa (bless her heart) brought me the above dust collector. Once I got it going in my shop, I really liked it. Quiet, powerful, and did an excellent job for two days before the motor burned-up. No problem, I took the motor assembly back to the place of purchase, and it was replaced.....no questions asked. The only complaints I have about this system pertains to the dust bags. Going to five micron bags on the part of the manufacturer should not be an after thought, and second; who's idea was it to leave one dollar's worth elastic banding out of the bottom bag anyway? This leaves me to assume that the unit is probably built in Taiwan by personnel that have never used one in a shop. If it is built in the good old USA, then that Design Engineer, Mr Tightwad, should be soundly spanked!

My wife gave me a 50-850 for Christmas. I love it. The fit and finish are excellent. I find it to be surprisingly quiet, though you still need hearing protection for prolonged exposure.

My product manual indicates that a 20 amp, 115 volt circuit is required. Perhaps this explains the previous reviewers breaker trips when using a 15 amp service.

The castors are sized appropriately so the collector rolls well. My only complaint is over the lack of a place to easily grab the collector when moving it around the shop. The temptation to use the power cord like a dog leash is strong. This is a minor gripe, however.

Your eyes and lungs will thank you for getting one of these.

I've had one of these for about a year now. It works well, although you do want to wear hearing protection around it. Delta was shipping 30 micron bags with it when I bought it and I immediately sold those and bought 5 micron bags. (Delta should be ashamed to give you 30 micron bags with this thing. If they are giving buyers 5 micron bags now, I raise my rating to 5 stars.)

Also, while it may kind of work on a 120 v/15 amp circuit, you are much better off wiring it as 220 v. No more circuit breaker popping then.
